Issued on UN Day 1954, this stamp - depicting a Sacred lotus - is the first stamp issued by India Post to commemorate the United Nations itself.

India is a founding member of the UN, having signed the United Nations Charter on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco, USA. The Charter mandates the UN to maintain peaceful and friendly relations among nations, strengthen international law, address development challenges and to promote human rights. The UN Charter came into force on 24 October that year, and the day is observed across the world as UN Day.

India’s multilateral vision was reiterated in its enthusiastic participation in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Over the years, India’s commitment to multilateralism has not wavered, spanning a broad spectrum of support – including UN Peacekeeping, climate change, human rights and sustainable development.

India and the UN have deeply influenced each other. Each was born from a struggle, one created from the sacrifices of a non-violent freedom movement , and the other from the ruins of a destructive war. The overriding concerns of the two are the same and universal – the rejection of discrimination, injustice and aggression.
